Where is Madeira you ask? Well let us tell you that contrary to what you might think you know Madeira isn`t an island. Well it there is a Madeira island of course, but that island is part of the overall Madeira archipelago which is located in the Atlantic Ocean in a sub-tropical region.
The Madeira archipelago is made up of a bunch of islands, two of them are populated: Madeira and Porto Santo, and two other groups of unpopulated islands which you can visit but there isn`t that much to do there.

The inhabited islands are known as the Islands of Eternal Spring, with Madeira being also called the Garden island or the Pearl of the Atlantic.
Where is Madeira?
Madeira Island itself is located 310 miles from the African coast and 620 miles from the closest European coastline. But the archipelago is an autonomous region of Portugal so there are direct flights from mainland Portugal that can take you here in about an hour and a half. From other major European countries the island can be reached in about three hours or so.
The island blends in a wonderful mix of sea, mountains and overall great weather. It has a bunch of sights to visit and obviously it will prove a great destination for those interesting in outdoorsy activities. On the other hand, it is also a great place to relax and take in some sun, sand and good food.
The great thing about where Madeira Island is located is that the temperatures are constantly between 20 and 27 Centigrade so you can visit it regardless of season in any hemisphere, it will always be spring here.
One of the best ways of seeing the place is by renting a car. European road rules apply in Madeira and keep in mind that the roads outside of Funchal are windy and quite steep and also that petrol stations are rare. Those considering employing some Madeira Car Hire services, you should definitely book something online, it will usually be cheaper than walking in.
